History of Clayton

In 1951 Ocean County, New Jersey was a sparsely populated area well known for its oceanfront resort areas like Point Pleasant and Seaside Heights and the winter resort of Lakewood. However, as the 1950's progressed, big changes were in store for Ocean County. People from North Jersey began to move "down the shore," and with the opening of the Garden State Parkway, the trickle became a gusher.

Riding the crest of the housing and construction boom was William Clayton who operated a mining company in Lakewood, Recognizing the need for a concrete supplier in the area, Clayton began the expansion of the company into the multi-faceted organization it has become today, a recognized leader in concrete, block products, aggregates and recycled materials. From their first small plant, the Clayton Companies have expanded to a network of plants and mining sites that completely service New Jersey as well as parts of New York and Pennsylvania. The group of companies includes Ralph Clayton & Sons, which provides ready-mix concrete and building materials for highway, residential and commercial developments; Clayton Block Co., Inc., which manufactures architectural and specialty concrete block products; and Clayton Sand, a leading supplier of sand to Clayton plants and customers. Late in 2005, Clayton opened a state-of-the art ready-mix batch plant and block manufacturing plant not far from the company's original site. Throughout the years, the Clayton name has been synonymous with quality and service and has been the recipient of many awards for concrete, masonry and marketing designs.

The masonry business, Clayton Block Co., Inc., produces a multitude of block shapes, sizes and textures. Masonry products introduced of late are the Clayton Garden State Paver Collection and Clayton GlasStone Architectural Masonry Units. A comprehensive line of interlocking concrete pavers complements the highly successful Allan Block Segmental Retaining Wall Systems and Allan Block Fence System. These products have found unprecedented acceptance by contractors, landscapers and homeowners. The GlasStone units join the already successful architectural masonry product line that Clayton offers. Split, Ground, Polished and Spectra-Glaze II® Glazed Masonry Units are featured in buildings across the country. Designers and architects specify Clayton products because of the quality, durability and color ranges offered to a project.

The Clayton Companies were at the forefront of the LEED™ program, identifying the products applicable to obtain LEED™ credits. The technical teams from both the block and concrete companies developed a comprehensive program to identify products that could be specified as contributing to LEED™ credits. In addition, Ralph Clayton & Sons has ACI accredited specialists that monitor production samples to maintain specification either on site or in one of Clayton's labs. Ralph Clayton & Sons technical staff developed specialty mixes -- High Performance Concrete -- products that have been used on such high-profile projects as the Raritan Bridge, Rt. 70 Bridge and the Rt. 52 Causeway.

Clayton Block has been directly involved with the architectural community with continuing education programs for over 15 years. Close to 150 seminars have been conducted reaching nearly 3,500 architects from across the country. In addition, Clayton's Technical Service Director sits on the Board of the National Concrete Masonry Association.

This commitment to service and quality has helped the Company grow during that past five decades and has positioned the Clayton Companies for continued diversity and growth.
